Stuart Varney
"There are no jobs!"
July 1, 2010 - Stuart Varney on Fox News once
said, "If you cut off their benefits, maybe they'll go find a job". Now today he ADMITTED that there are no jobs!
And
another 472,000 new claims were files this week alone! That's
4.62 million on-going State claims and doesn't include the
millions who lost their Federal extended benefits (Tiers I
through IV, the additional 20 to 99 weeks of federal claims.)
NOTE: Stuart Varney uses this fact more as an attack on Obama's policies, not because he's sympathetic to the jobless.
On the contrary, even knowing what he knows, Stuart Varney (as does everyone else) is still firmly against giving these jobless people extended benefits.
Are they ALL heartless?
What's still irks me is that all attention is for those who only RECENTLY lost their benefits. The ones who were laid off in 2008 through mid-2009 (and have exhausted all their benefits) have been suffering without any income for months - but yet, they're never even mentioned!
Remember, Max Baucus said 99 weeks was "sufficient", even though most people never saw 73 weeks...even in the highest unemployed States.
As Stuart Varney noted today, if
there are no jobs, how is ANYBODY (99er or not) expected to
survive without any addition unemployment benefits?
One blogger suggested the "99ers" have hurt the chances for the rest of the jobless
who had hoped for an extension to their benefits; but I believe it's the misnomer that ALL the long-term unemployed have collected a full 99 weeks of unemployment benefits - and
it is that that has hurt these supposed "99ers" even more. After all, they've been out of work
much longer without earning a "normal" working wage and have been without
ANY income for a very long while.
(And so what...even if hypothetically
speaking these people all HAD received benefits for the maximum
allowable of 99 weeks, that still doesn't excuse the fact
that there are no jobs for any of these people!)
I once suggested that they (the "99ers") instead be named after the musical "Les Misérables" (The Miserable Ones) because that's a fairer and more accurate description...many
have already been through bankruptcies, home foreclosures, car repossessions,
and evictions. Some took their own lives.
Also, the demographics show that
about half these people are "middle-aged", and have been
discriminated against for both being "old" and for
having been out of work for so long. They are the ones who have
the least chance of ever finding a job again if or when a
real economic recovery ever occurs.
The facts on joblessness: The unemployed have become
the foremost EXPERTS on this subject, not Stuart Varney!
There are about 15 million unemployed people in America (almost 10% of the
reduced workforce).
There are another 15 million who are "under" employed (forced to take
lower-paying jobs).
Approximately 20% of the U.S. labor pool is suffering when 5% is considered
"normal" during more prosperous times.
1) Since 2008 over 8.5 million were laid off from their jobs through no fault of their own.
2) There are very few jobs available (1 for every 5.5 jobless).
3) About 6.8 million people received extended benefits - between 26 and 99wks (average 52wks).
4) Congress (all Republicans, 1 Democrat) won't extend benefits any further (demanding
PAYGO).
5) There is still a "FALSE CAP" at 99 weeks max, even though the last depression lasted 12 years.
Nearly half of the "9.7 percent" of unemployed Americans (about 6.8 million people) have been without work for six months or longer, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. And according to an analysis at the Pew Economic Policy Group, nearly a quarter of the nation’s 15 million unemployed workers have been jobless for a year or more (laid off in 2008 through mid-2009). That percentage translates into 3.75 million people, roughly equivalent to the population of Connecticut.
I believe that since it's now COMMON KNOWLEDGE that there are NO jobs, EVERYONE should have their unemployment insurance income extended until (if) the economy ever turns around.
Pew Research
predicts that this could take years. If that is the case, then so be it. America must bite the bullet. Maybe repeal the $1.2+ trillion healthcare bill and allow the American jobless citizens and their families to pay the rent and eat a
little while longer.
The term "99ers" should now simply refer to everyone who no longer receives any unemployment insurance income...no matter how many weeks they've
previously collected or how many weeks they've been out of work. If you're unemployed and can't find a job today, you should be allowed to collect benefits until the unemployment rate is back down to 6 or 7 %.
PERIOD!
