Remembering the American Dream: From Boom to Bust

Can The Terminator Save America?

July 3, 2010 - Democratic Pennsylvania Governor Edward G. Rendell was on Fox News discussing layoffs of state workers because of shortfalls in the state budget. He said it's always difficult to lay off people, but especially in this economy, when he knows it will be almost impossible to find another job.

NOTE: He didn't say a "comparable" job or a "similar job", he said "another" job, as in "any" damn job.

Republican California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is attempting to impose the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour to 200,000 state workers, until closing their $19 billion budget deficit.

Only 4 states don't have budget deficits and there is going to be more lay-offs and cut-backs in most other state budgets as well - which will again, reduce the size of the overall labor force, and further reduce the tax base.

So if all these states lay off more people, and more and more people lose their unemployment benefits, then shouldn't the unemployment rate continue to fall?

Yes!

By this time next year (with 15 million unemployed people) we should have a ZERO PERCENT unemployment rate.

But how can that be?

Because according the Bureau of Labor Statistics, after all those people exhaust their unemployment benefits, ALL 15 million of those unemployed people will then be considered "discouraged workers" who "didn't look for work"  and had "dropped out of the labor force" - so therefore, will no longer be counted. They become forgotten and/or invisible...just like homeless people.

And what would America and Arnold Schwarzenegger have to say to all those "lazy" people who lost their unemployment benefits?

"Hasta la vista, baby!"
